How to do personal on social media without being personal

Sharing your life on socials in the name of promoting your business doesn’t come naturally to many of us. But, as social selling becomes a bigger reality for business owners, the pressure to share yourself has become more of a demand than ever. So, how do we share enough for our audience to know us without oversharing and feeling uncomfortable?

First step is to set your boundaries. What are you willing to share with the world? Once it is out there, it’s out there, so be clear on your boundaries first. If it’s more than just you, discuss with your partner, friends, family and STAFF first!

Here are a few ideas for building a relationship that you might not have considered:

1.    Have a story template or photos that you use as a background to do a daily update. So, each day you post what you are up to - creating content, packing orders, meetings etc. Write as if you were speaking to the camera - one-on-one! Tell a story or share information - lately we have seen a bit of uptake of text based stories and more of a magazine feel to stories which is great if you don’t want to show your face but still want to connect with your audience!

2.    Have a highlight for ‘about me’ as well as on your website. Even if you your face isn’t plastered all over your socials if people can find out who you are easy enough they will be satisfied!

3.    Have a well rounded marketing strategy and spend more time on other promotion and marketing tools - networking online and in person, events (attending and hosting), sponsorship and advertising, community engagement, public relations…

Remember at the end of the day, audiences respond to authenticity and consistency. Keep it on brand, true to yourself and just keep going!
