How to create and deliver great training - - online or F2F
As a qualified trainer & assessor and adult educator I’ve spent a lot of time in classrooms - - as the student and teacher. I’ve learnt what does and doesn’t work and how to adapt to different learners.
Even as so much learning has transitioned to online study and vastly different formats, creating engaging training sessions is a must.
Regardless of whether you are creating formal training for accredited coursework or designing workshops or webinars in your area of expertise, there are some key tips you should remember.
Make outcomes clear
Adult learners need to know what benefit they will get from participating in your session. Remind them early and often of why they are there. I also like to have one key take home message for every session I do. This will always relate to key learning outcomes but be clear and simple. This will also be the first point I discuss in the next session.
Chunk content
Always have a session plan that breaks up material into topical chunks. Attention spans are short and you want to deliver content in a way that moves forward before you lose the room. You can break material up with videos, discussion, practical activity etc.
Use different mediums where possible
This follows on from chunking...nobody likes a never ending PowerPoint and a mono tone rendition.
Check in and prompt discussion
You want your learners to connect your content with their experience. I like to use universal examples such as grocery shopping, making the bed, getting petrol. These are experiences that most learners can identify with and relate to. Also, check progress along the way - - ask if there are any questions!
The best part of producing engaging content is the satisfaction and enjoyment you get when delivering it!
